TOP SHELF

Old Dominion headlined WPOC’s largest “Sunday in the Country” festival to date last night! There had to have been at least 15,000 fans in attendance for one of the last amphitheater style shows of the 2019 and the boys from Old Dominion did not disappoint. It was great to hear some new music from their soon-to-be-released third studio album – fans really responded to “Some People Do” and “Midnight Mess Around” as well as their current single “One Man Band.” I think “Snapback” and “Break Up With Him” are two of my absolute favorite songs to experience live – especially with a crowd response like the one I saw last night. These guys are just straight-up superstars and a live act absolutely worth seeing if you ever get the chance. One of my personal fav moments of the entire night was when Old Dominion did a little acoustic round of the #1 hits they’ve written for other artists like Blake Shelton, Tyler Farr, The Band Perry, Dierks Bentley, Sam Hunt, Luke Bryan, Michael Ray – I honestly didn’t realize they had done so much as songwriters – I’d love to have them put out a little EP of the hits they’ve written for other artists! Anyways – re-live that and some of my other fav moments right now on @MorningHangover InstaStory . More on the STACKED “Sunday in the Country” line-up below which featured Michael Ray, Dylan Scott, Jimmie Allen, Jordan Davis, Filmore & Lauren Alaina!

ON THE HOUSE

Our fav DWTS contestant Lauren Alaina kicked things off yesterday at the Merriweather Post Pavilion (there’s a friggin’ pool backstage btw). I’ll tell you what’s amazing about Lauren – because of her DWTS commitment, she had to fly from CA to Maryland and as soon as she got off stage, she had to hustle to the airport to fly back to Los Angeles to get ready for tonight’s live episode. How many artists’ do you think would do that for a 30 minute performance? But that’s the kind of human Lauren is and there was no way she was going to disappoint her DMV fans (that’s DC-Maryland-Virginia for you outsiders)! I’ve always been impressed with how Lauren is able to create an emotional connection with her audience – her story is raw, real & authentic – and the people – especially the young girls in the crowd – really respond to it. There was a great moment when a girl in the crowd took off the cast/brace on her broken leg and Lauren grabbed it, carried it around on stage and signed it – watch our InstaStory and you’ll see!

FRONT OF THE HOUSE

This was actually the very first time I got to see Michael Ray perform live (outside of a guitar pull) and I have to tell you – I was really impressed. Michael has some god-given charisma that just shines through when he’s up there. You’d never know he was fighting a cold all day – although it was a great moment when a fan broke-out a bag of cough drops for him – don’t think I’ve seen that one before! I came away thinking to myself that Michael is a born show-man and I’m really excited to see what steps forward he takes next.

TAILGATE WATCH

You’d never think that a dude who looks like Jordan Davis sounds as smooth as he does! I’ve only seen Jordan perform one other time and that was more than a year ago, so it was really neat for me to see Jordan play on the heels of his second #1 “Take It From Me” and chart climber “Slow Dance In A Parking Lot” – which has to be the perfect summertime amphitheater ballad. What I dig about Jordan’s performance was the rock-edge that he has that really rounds out his sound and makes him more versatile/dynamic. Have to say one of the loudest sing-along’s of the day was “Singles You Up.” I’ll have more takes from “Sunday in the Country” in tomorrow’s edition so keep on reading!

Special thanks to WPOC’s Program Director and all-around good guy Mike Preston for having me out at #SundayInTheCountry yesterday. It means so much to have the support of the country radio community. This tipsheet would not be possible without people like Mike!
