SAW IT
  • I don’t usually do this type of content in this tipsheet or in this section, but what I saw on Saturday night in Boston on Thomas Rhett’s “Center Point Road” Tour warrants a little extra love. I think this is a night I’ll be looking back on one day and saying, “I was at Conner Smith in Boston.” In the hundreds of country music concerts I’ve had the good fortune of attending, I’ve never seen someone come out in the opening spot and crush it the way Conner did. The energy, charisma, engagement, crowd participation was off-the-charts for Valory Music Co.’s newest sensation. If you were take a little bit of TR, mix it with some Sam Hunt, add a dash of Luke Bryan, with a pinch of Dustin Lynch, that’s what Conner was on Saturday night. I do not say this lightly – it was special and I think this kid is going to be HUGE. You can see some of the highlights on my Insta here but they honestly don’t do the performance justice because I was so into it, I forgot to film and post. I also have to say that it says a lot about TR that he gives so much freedom to his opening act to make full use of the stage and the crowd the way he let Conner – that doesn’t always happen! Be sure and check out his debut single “Learn From It” – which I already have on repeat.

WENT TO IT
  • My first visit to the Xfinity Center in Boston/Mansfield was a memorable one as Thomas Rhett delivered one of the most memorable concert nights I’ve had in a long time. One of the things I love about getting to do the Morning Hangover is traveling to different venues and different cities, and I have to say, there is a real special energy about live music in Boston. The thing about a TR show is it’s just hit after hit after hit – it’s kind of ridiculous. What stood out to me though was the growth in TR as a performer. I remember going to previous shows/tours a few years back and there was a lot more production/video elements. On this tour, TR strips it down a bit because he really doesn’t need the bells & whistles, he’s an attraction all to himself. He’s so much more comfortable and sure of himself. There’s a maturity that comes from life experience and, being a father of 3 (soon to be 4), has that in a different way than he did just 4 or 5 years ago. There aren’t many acts who can put on a show like this – where there really is something for everyone – if like more traditional country music – he’s got you covered with songs like “Country Again” and “What’s Your Country Song.” If your jam is more up-tempo, he hits you with “Craving You,” “Look What God Gave Her,” and “T-Shirt.” Wanna slow it down from love songs and ballads, “Die A Happy Man” and “Marry Me.” Feeling sentimental? “Remember You Young.” Want a dose of R&B in your night – “Make Me Wanna.” BTW, TR previewed a song he’s doing with Riley Green called “Half of Me” that you’re gonna love. I don’t know what else I can say other than this show is a complete entertainment experience that you’re gonna love! Watch highlights right now on my Insta! Special thanks to the Valory team (George and Don) for taking such great care of me. I’ll have more on my night in Boston in tomorrow’s edition including the fun I had with some radio folks from Maine and NH!
