FRONT OF THE HOUSE

Had the opportunity to see my first-ever, country music concert outside the USA and it did not disappoint. THE King of the North, Brett Kissel, closed out the Park Jam Music Festival in London, Ontario on Friday night. BK, who just won a CCMA Award for Apple Music’s Fan Choice, lives up to that banner. This is an artist you need to experience live to appreciate. If you were to take Garth Brooks and combine him with Jason Aldean and a little Luke Bryan with a smidge of Granger Smith, you’d get Brett. That’s how good he was. He has the emotional sincerity of Garth, a rockin’ anthem feel like Aldean, some fun butt-movin’ tunes like Luke and the workin’-man’s appeal and accessibility of Granger. That coupled with a sprinkle of that Canadian humility and you have an artist who I believe is truly special. The live show aside, what spoke volumes about Kissel was the impromptu meet-and-greet he held with a hundred fans at the festival. He was doing some country radio interviews, and instead of hopping on the golf cart to disappear backstage, he stuck around to take selfies with fans. This was before the meet-n-greet he already had scheduled for later on in the night. But that’s who Brett Kissel is – he gives every ounce of everything he has to his fans. He is one of the hardest working artists you will ever meet. If I ran a label in the United States, I’d make it a priority to see his live show, and then, I’d sign him because he is that good. I don’t think we’ve ever had a male Canadian country artist breakthrough in the states in a big way, Brett Kissel should be the first!
